VERACRUZ, Mexico, Nov. 16, 2014–Colombia took the lead over Mexico despite an individual top score from the home side’s Bernadette Pujals and Aurora el Camino midway through the Central American and Caribbean Games Nations Cup Sunday.
Standings in the Nations Cup after the Prix St. Georges: 1. Colombia 205.053, 2. Mexico 202.158, 3. Costa Rica 194.764, 4. Venezuela 194.500, 5. Guatemala 194.079.
Bernadette and Aurora el Camino scored 69.447 per cent as the top individual with Colombia’s Raul Corchuelo on Beckham second on 69.053 and Luis Denizard-Reteguiz riding as an individual for Puerto Rico on Royal Affair in third on 68.684 per cent.
Questions were raised over the judging by the five-member ground jury, especially disparities that appeared to impact Venezuela that was in fourth place after the first of the two days of the Nations Cup that will decide the top three teams to qualify for the Pan American Games.
For Irina Moleiro on Vom Primaire with an average of 66.263 per cent the gap was 69.211 per cent at the high end and 61.711 per cent at the lowest from Marian Cunningham of Peru, president of the ground jury.
Bernadette dominated CDI small tour competitions in Mexico City this summer on the nine-year-old Mexican-bred mare. Bernadette is the most experienced international rider in the regional Games that are a qualifier for the Pan American Games in Toronto next summer. Her record includes Olympics, multiple World Games, Pan Americans and Central American Games.
Raul competed Beckham, a 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding, at a CDI in Bogotá, Colombia, his home base this year. He is a veteran of regional championships and was on the Colombian team that won gold at the 2010 Central American & Caribbean Games.
Colombia’s son and father riders based in Wellington Florida, 17-year-old Marco Bernal, Jr. on Zalvador and Marco Bernal, team and individual gold medalist from 2010, on Farewell IV scored 68.432. per cent and 67.658 per cent, respectively.
Zalvador, ridden by Marco, Jr. for only the past two months, is a 10-year-old KWPN gelding owned by Alejandro Gomez who bought the horse from France’s Marc Boblet.
The Nations Cup will be decided Monday by the Intermediate 1.
