Arlene “Tuny” Page and Alina won the De Kraal International CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle at Zandhoven, Belgium Sunday for the American pair’s first victory in Europe and the most successful show for the rider outside the United States.

The score of 72.500 per cent was their highest ever outside the United States and the second highest Freestyle mark in four years of CDI competition, mostly on the U.S. East Coast. Their previous best Freestyle result in Europe was 71.550 per cent at Lingen, Germany in 2013.

Sunday’s victory followed a second place for Tuny and the 16-year-old Danish Warmblood mare in the Grand Prix Friday and as runnerup on her Woodstock in the Grand Prix Special on Saturday.

Spain’s Morgan Barbançon Mestre on Vitana V was second in the Freestyle on 71.150 per cent with Mario  van Orshaegen of Belgium on Wilco V in third on  69.465 per cent.

This newly created CDI was the last European competition this year for Tuny and her two Grand Prix horses who will return to their Wellington, Florida base later this month to prepare for the Global Dressage Festival winter circuit.

Of the results, she exclaimed to dressage-news.com:

“It feels great.

“Alina!

“Well I can only say that she loves her life and her job because she goes to the arena and tries her heart out.”

Woodstock, an 11-year-old KWPN gelding she bought as a small tour horse in late 2012, placed second on 69.157 per cent in the Grand Prix Special Saturday after finishing eighth on 66.080 per cent in the Grand Prix on Friday.

The horse’s inexperience in only their second CDI Big Tour show was marked by tension in the Grand Prix.

“Chou,” as she calls Woodstock, “was just lovely to ride yesterday in the Special.

“He matured over 24 hours from the Grand Prix to the Special.

“I know that very soon his experience and confidence will catch up with his basic talent and he will be what we all dreamed of.”

Tuny has been based for the past two summers with her coach, Jürgen Koschel at Hagen, Germany, competing Alina at eight shows, including on the American silver medal team at the Hickstead, England Nations Cup in 2013.

She brought the mare back to the U.S. for the American team World Equestrian Games selection trials in Gladstone, New Jersey in mid-June but returned to Europe when the pair did not finish in the top eight that would have qualified them for the WEG team long list.

Tuny has competed extensively on the East Coast of the United States and in Europe over the years, including the World Cup Final with her Wild One in Amsterdam in 2006.

“I am incredibly proud of the team around me and the family, sponsors and friends that support me,” she said.

“I am one lucky girl.”
