WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 24, 2014–Emilion SA ridden by Kelly Casey became the United States five-year-old champion on Saturday in the rider’s first appearance in the national championships.
The KWPN gelding (Painted Black x Landwind II B) and Kelly improved from their preliminary victory to score 8.72 in the final after taking the opening event on Thursday with a score of 8.62.
Encore ridden by Amy Miller of Chino Hills, in Southern California, placed third on 8.4.
Kelly of Livermore, California imported Emilion from Holland a year ago,
Emilion was bought by Kelly and her friend Bob Tenwolde in the Netherlands as an unbroken three-year-old as sales prospect. Bob began training the horse in Holland until Kelly shipped the dark bay, nicknamed “Eeyore,” to her San Francisco Bay area farm in July, 2013.
Every time she thinks of putting him on the market, Kelly said, “he reveals another layer of talent. His athleticism, ability to collect and the correct use of his whole body, make riding him daily an absolute pleasure and confirm my belief that he is on the road to Grand Prix.”
Although her business, KC Dressage, is a training and sales operation with a mix of young horses, imported sales horses and amateurs the young horse championships at this Chicago suburban show ground is her first.
