VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 9, 2014–Sezuan, the Danish Warmblood stallion ridden by German Olympian Dorothee Schneider, on Saturday became the five-year-old World Young Horse Champion.
The stunning dark bay by Blue Horse Zack out of a Don Schufro mare was awarded a mark of 10 for the canter and 9.6 for both the walk and trot, 9.7 for submission and 9.9 for general impression for an overall score of 9.76 from the international ground jury.
The horse, owned by Gestüt Peterhof of Perl, Germany beat out the Westfalen mare Samoura M (san Amour x Ferragamo) ridden by Ann-Christin Wienkamp that scored 9.34 for second place and the KWPN stallion Eyecatcher (Vivaldi x Partout) ridden by Kirsten Brouwer on 9.30 for third place.
Ghislain Fouarge of the Netherlands, speaking for the ground jury, described the top half dozen horses in the annual championships as “really fantastic.”
The training and performances in recent years, he said, have “imroved tremendously. The riding is much nicer. We never see the horses not happy.”
Dorothee, who rode for Germany at the 2012 Olympics in London, said: “It was an amazing feeling because he is an amazing horse. I understand him and he understands me.”
She started riding the horse only in March this year, she said, and “we are growing more and more together.”
The next goal is the six-year-old championships at this same show grounds in a year’s time.
Samoura M’s rider, Ann-Christin Wienkamp, said the German national championships the first week of September is the next goal for the horse that received his highest score of 9.60 for the trot. The judges praised the horses cadence and swinging back.
Kirsten Brouwer and Eye Catcher was the only other combination to receive a mark of 10, which they did for the trot. However, mistakes in the canter for a mark of 8.90 put them into third place.
“He is a great horse to ride,”Kirsten said of the chestnut stallion that she resumed riding only four weeks ago. She had ridden the horse for a couple of months last winter but then the horse was turned over to another rider.
“He did his best,” she said. “Two day of competition is hard for a horse, but he did his best. You sit and he goes.”
