AACHEN, Germany, July 18, 2014–Germans Victoria Michalke on Dance On and Nadine Husenbeth on Florida, both seasoned Under 25 Grand Prix combinations placed first and second while 16-year-old Juan Matute on Don Diego Ymas starred to fill third place in their first time at the World Equestrian Festival.
Just one week after competing in the European Junior Championships, Juan of Wellington, Florida was the youngest rider to show in the Under-25 division at the world’s premier horse.
Victoria on Dance On scored 70.814 per cent and Nadine Husenbeth on Florida 70.535 per cent.
Juan Matute, youngest by one day of the 13 starting combinations and in only the third Grand Prix for the pair, was awarded 68.442 per cent. Paula Matute, his sister and a year older, rode Tarpan Ymas to 10th place on 66.047 per cent.
The family of Juan Matute, a three-time Olympian for Spain, moved to Florida six years ago, with Paula competing in dressage and the younger Juan initially in eventing before switching to dressage.
“So unexpected… our third Grand Prix. I was just hoping for a top 10 finish and a fun experience,” Juan told dressage-news.com after the ride.
“At the end of the day I’m 16 and to come third in the Grand Prix, I couldn’t ask for any more.
“This is Aachen…”
Juan said he does not get nervous in competition and despite riding for the first time in such a venue as the 6,300-seat Deutsche Bank stadium he said to himself, “We’re ready, let’s do a good job, especially at Aachen. Aachen is Aachen, the stadium is a Colliseum.
“It’s a big stadium but you can hear everything–the clicking of the cameras, the whispers of the spectators and there are lots of shadows at this time of day (later afternoon).
“Don Diego is very calm and listens to the rider. I knew Don Diego would be fine. I trusted him 100 per cent but above all we’re going to have fun.
“There’s no time to fix things at this stage, you just smile and move forward.”
As a former event rider whose love was the cross country he never thought he would get this far in dressage so soon.
“This is the first time I’ve ever ridden in a show like this,” he said.
“It’s really addictive, seeing all the top riders concentrated in one spot. To make it into the lap of honor, it’s emotional, its addictive. Hopefully there is more to come in the future.
“We all like dreaming, but we have to be realistic. We have to work for our dreams.
“It’s really satisfying when you make it here,” he said with a smile. “Wow!”
