AACHEN, Germany, July 17, 2014–Totilas was ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath to lead Germany to complete domination of the CDIO5* Nations Cup Thursday with team mate Helen Langehanenberg on Damon Hill NRW and the Netherlands’ Adelinde Cornelissen on Jerich Parzival joining the black stallion in posting scores of better than 80 per cent with Isabell Werth on Bella Rose close in the Grand Prix.
World No. 1 Valegro ridden by Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain stunned the crowd packing the stadium newly expanded to seat 6,300 spectators with an error-filled ride by the world record holders that scored 76.900 per cent. The score for the 12-year-old KWPN gelding and Charlotte was their lowest since they were awarded 73.396 per cent at a competition in France on March 2, 2011
Charlotte and Carl Hester, her coach and part owner of Valegro, refused to speak with reporters after the ride and were hustled away by British equestrian officials to the closed off stabling.
This competition was the first for the pair since winning the World Cup Final in April and they appeared rusty.
Germany as the winners of the Nations Cup, the Netherlands in second and Spain in third said they were all happy with the results, but especially the home team that filled first, second and fourth places.
Matthias and Totilas scored 82.300 per cent in what was probably the cleanest ride of the 39 combinations competing in the Nations Cup.
Matthias said of the 14-year-old KWPN stallion that he last competed at this World Equestrian Festival in 2011 before illness to him and injury to Totilas knocked the pair out of the competition arena for two years that a new trainer, Sjef Janssen, the former Dutch team coach, and the break contributed to their improved performances over the past two months.
Totilas, that once held all three Grand Prix world records when ridden by Edward Gal of the Netherlands but now belonging to Valegro, has regained much if not all of the magic that silences crowded stadiums while performing to erupt with a standing ovation when the ride is over.
Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, who have not being in the show ring since the World Cup Final indoors in April scored 81.022 per cent for second place while Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival who were the reigning world champions until the 2012 Olympics were third on 80.980 per cent.
Helen and Damon Hill also have been off the competition circuit since the World Cup Final.
She was surprised when the horse who knows the Grand Prix so well, she said, has come back fresh and on the final centerline “decided it was good we stop now. My reaction was a little bit too much.” The horse leaped forward to finish the final passage that was very expensive for her score but was still over 80 per cent.
