AACHEN, Germany, July 16, 2014–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl rode Unee BB to victory in the World Equestrian Festival CDI4* Grand Prix Wednesday night that was marked by a disobedient Don Johnson FRH ridden by Isabell Werth posting the pair’s lowest ever Grand Prix score in more than three years on the Big Tour.
The victory on a score of 73.220 per cent by Germany’s Jessica and Unee BB, a 13-year-old KWPN stallion, was their third in almost 18 months at Grand Prix. The pair won the Grand Prix and the Freestyle at the World Cup qualifier in Gothenburg, Sweden in March.
Fellow German Fabienne Lütkemeier on D’Agostino FRH was second on 73.200 per cent.
One of the most emotional riders was Poland’s Beata Stremler on Rubicon D who placed third on 72.400 per cent. The pair began competing at Grand Prix only four months ago and this was their fourth show and the Grand Prix result was their best so far, and at the world’s premier dressage event.
Megan Lane, the 23-year-old Canadian, rode her Caravella to 70.460 per cent and ninth place, the best finish of the four North Americans in the Grand Prix.
Megan competed Caravella in the North American Young Rider Championships in 2010 and began their Grand Prix career two years ago.
The partnership between Megan and the 13-year-old KWPN mare clicked during this year’s Florida winter circuit and the pair qualified for the Canadian team to go to the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France next month.
“It just hit me yesterday that I’m at Aachen,” she told dressage-news.com. “I tried to ride like this is just another show and not Aachen.
“I’m so happy… I don’t know what else to say… I’m… it is so great!”
Isabell Werth, Germany’s most decorated dressage rider was awarded 69.920 percent–the first Grand Prix result below 70 per cent for 11th place in the event in the Deutsche Bank dressage stadium.
It was the first day of dressage competition in the newly completed €8 million (US$10.8 million) extension and a newly configured supersized warmup arena with hedges at a level that shows the heads of passersby but nothing below that some riders said spooked their horses.
Isabell did not offer any complaints or excuses for the performance, especially in the first piaffe tour where the disobedience dropped their score to about 63 per cent for a couple of movements, by the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding. Before Wednesday night, they had scored a low of 71.900 per cent to a high of 75.380 per cent this year.
