FRITZENS, Austria, July 4, 2014–Steffen Peters of the United States and Rosamunde celebrated the Fourth of July with a victory in the Schindlhof CDI4* Prix St. Georges Friday, and did it with a personal best score.
The seven-year-old Rhinelander mare scored 75.105 per cent to give what Steffen described as “a real Fourth of July party” in the first competition to kick off the first World Equestrian Games selection trial for eight United States horses and riders and five Australian riders.
German Olympic rider Dorothee Schneider and the eight-year-old Showtime placed second on 74.789 per cent and fellow German Karin Rehbein on Royal Princess M in third on 71.395 per cent.
Rosamunde was competing outside the United States for the first time since Akiko Yamazaki’s Four Winds Farm bought the mare as a successor to Ravel and Legolas and since winning the United States Intermediate championship in Gladstone, New Jersey last month.
The horse’s previous best result at a CDI Prix St. Georges was 73.772 per cent in California in May.
“She has been simply amazing traveling from Gladstone to Europe, three days of super easy work in Belgium then starting on the fourth day right where we left off in New Jersey,” said Steffen of San Diego, California.
“That’s what’s so valuable in a horse–consistency. Here we were in new surroundings and on the first day Legolas was more distracted than she was.
“It’s a wonderful feeling that I didn’t have to make any adjustments compared wth Gladstone.
“It was a clean test. Rosie gave me a wonderful feeling.”
He hopes to keep the same feeling through the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany in two weeks.
Rosie, as Steffen calls her, does have a bit of a problem–she and Legolas are so attached that one horse cannot be left in the stall when the other one leaves. She’s fine, he said, as long as she is with “big brother Legolas.”
Althugh he is working Grand Prix movements at home–they have completed 13 one-tempi changes and the piaffe os”quite nice”–he is not going to rush development of Rosie but keep her at small tour for the Pan American Games next year when she will be eight years old.
“That’s a perfect age to be thinking about the Grand Prix.”
Steffen quoted Einstein as saying”imagination is better than knowledge.’
“I imagine quite a bit.”
