Totilas Posts His Highest Ever Grand Prix Score 85.180%. Isabell With Bella Rose Joins 80% Club

In a breathtaking dressage competition, Totilas was ridden on Friday by Matthias Alexander Rath to the stallion’s highest ever Grand Prix score, 85.180 per cent, while Isabell Werth rode Bella Rose to 80.100 per cent to gain entry for the German superstar into the elite 80 per cent club.

The score at the Peterhof CDI4* at Perl-Borg, Germany for Matthias and the 14-year-old black stallion was the highest ever for the horse in the Grand Prix, including when ridden at Big Tour by Edward Gal of the Netherlands 2009 through the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010. Their best Grand Prix result was 84.085 per cent at the European Championships in Windsor, England in 2009.

The result for Matthias and Totilas came in only their third show since returning from an absence of two years to recover from an injury and to train with Sjef Janssen, the Dutch team coach when Edward and the stallion set the horse world on fire with world record scores.

Since Mathias took over the ride after the 2010 WEG, their best Grand Prix award was 83.809 per cent at Hagen, Germany in 2012, the last CDI for the pair before the injury that kept them out of the Olympic Games in London.

“Totilas has given me a great feeling,” Matthias said after his ride. “And the result makes me very happy.”

He said he trains three days a week with former Dutch coach Sjef Janssen in Erp, Netherlands.

“I have a lot of fun training and Sjef and I also get on incredibly well together. ”

While Totilas won the Grand Prix, the score of 80.100 per cent for Isabell and Bella Rose placed them second and finally moved the rider into the exclusive 80 per cent club. the London Olympic combination of Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH placed third on 79.700 per cent, their best result in more than two years.

Isabell and the 10-year-old Westfalen mare have been competing at the Big Tour only since May of 2013 and their previous best Grand Prix result was 77.760 per cent at Munich last month.

“I’ve never had a horse that is physically and mentally so sensitive and delicate as Bella Rose,” Isabell said. “The move today, the moments of tension–these are things that can be attributed to the high level of commitment. We have left her a long time to mature and it was worth it to wait. The rest will come with the routine and time.”

Isabell, at 44 years of age, has won 32 championship medals, including 24 golds at Olympics, world and European championships as well as World Cup titles, that is unmatched in the sport. Only the late Reiner Klimke of Germany in his total of 23 championship medals, 20 of them gold, has won more Olympic gold medals, six.

The score for Totilas compares with the world record of 87.129 per cent held by Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro–the pair also hold the Grand Prix Special and Freestyle records.

Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, ranked second in the world only behind Charlotte and Valegro, was the only top German combination missing from this competition that was to observe the country’s best horses and riders in preparation for the WEG in Normandy, France in two months.
