COMPIÈGNE, France, June 1, 2014–Gareth Hughes and DV Stenkjers Nadonna captured the CDI3* Grand Prix Special with a a score that far surpassed their previous best and the second straight victory for the British partnership while Australia’s Mary Hanna and Sancette were runnerup with their first ever result above 70 per cent for the Special.
Gareth and the 16-year-old Holsteiner mare, who won the Grand Prix a day earlier, scored 74.115 per cent for their fourth win in their third year on the Big Tour. The panel of four judges–instead of the usual five–all placed the pair first all with scores above 73 per cent.
“It’s the best test she has ever made,” Gareth said after the event. “It’s the type of event she loves. She loves when she has to passage, extend, passage, all the trot movements…
“She really has a lot of heart, but she was a bit tired today. I chose to compete in the Grand Prix Special as this is an event I particularly like in the three-star level. It’s a good training for Nadonna. In one month, we will participate in the test events of the World Equestrian Games, and then we will wait to know the selections. ”
The pair were on Great Britain’s bronze medal team at the European Championships last year. Their previous best Special mark was 70.604 per cent at Saumur, France a year ago.
The score of 71.745 per cent for the four-time Aussie Olympian and her 2012 London Games partner put them into second place and the best result this year for any Australian combination seeking to ride on their nation’s team at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France at the end of August.
In the Grand Prix a day earlier, Mary and the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Sandri Hit x Contender) she calls “Sausage,” posted a personal best. The pair came to Europe as the entry for the Pacific League for the World Cup Final in Lyon in April.
“AWESOME!!!! Finally cracked it!!”Mary posted on Facebook page. Compiegne, Sausage in the Grand Prix Special 71.5% and 2nd place. WHOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!”
Belgium’s Francoise Hologne-Joux and Wodan placed third on 71.094 per cent.
Daniel Sherriff of Great Britain and Bayford Hall Dallaglio won the Grand Prix Freestyle with a score of 72.525 per cent with Filipe Canelas of Portugal and Der Clou second on 71.250 per cent and Estonia’s Grete Barake on Talent third on 70.225 per cent.
