The Swedish Olympic pair of Minna Telde and Santana posted a personal best result to win the CDI4* Hamburg Dressage Derby Grand Prix Thursday with two Florida-based Danish combinations placing second and third.
Minna and the 13-year-old black stallion (Sandro Hit x Rubinstein I) scored 73.875 per cent for their first victory in more than two years.
Mikala Münter Gundersen based in Wellington, Florida and My Lady, a 14-year-old Danish Warmblood mare by Michellino, were second on 71.700 per cent, their highest CDI Grand Prix result in two summers of showing the horse in Europe, but the pair have scored higher in the United States.
Lars Petersen, also based in Florida, and Mariett were third on 70.000 per cent.
Both Danish combinations made mistakes in the one-tempi changes.
Mikala and My Lady, one of 30 combinations from 12 nations in the Grand Prix, received scores of more than 70 per cent from all five judges.
“Lady was great to ride and she feels stronger and fitter than ever,” she told dressage-news.com. “I enjoyed the great feeling in the one-tempis and then my legs forgot to keep riding. I think we had many good movements and I feel we are ready for the Danish championships next week.”
The pair went to Europe last month for the World Cup Final after the intensive Adequan Global Dressage Festival winter circuit in Wellington where they posted 12 top three finishes.
Mikala has been competing My Lady at international Grand Prix since February, 2012, shortly after the mare was bought in Denmark for her to show by Janne Rumbough, a longtime Danish-born resident of the United States and herself a popular amateur Grand Prix rider.
This is Mikala’s second summer with My Lady on the European circuit.
Along with Lars and Mariett, the pair were on the Danish Nations Cup team at Rotterdam in 2013 and posted a victory at Fritzens, Austria in addition to competing in the Danish Championships..
Lars Petersen, the Olympic, world championship and World Cup star for Denmark most famously on Blue Hors Cavan, has been competing Mariett, a 16-year-old Danish Warmblood mare (Come Back II x Sidney) since March 2012.
“I had several mistakes,” Lars told dressage-news.com, “happy overall.
“Good warmup for Danish championships, we hope…”
The competition partnership of Lars and Mariett began after a long rehabilitation from a freak accident in which the mare tore off an entire hoof. The horse had initially been bought for Marcia Pepper to show as an amateur, but during rehabilitation with Lars it led to him taking over the ride.
Lars and Mariett were among the top combinations in the United States, including capturing the World Cup North American League title this year. But an abscess kept them from competing in the Final in Lyon, France in April. The pair also were the top money winners on the Florida winter circuit where they placed first on four occasions.
On this Europe competition swing, the pair finished third at the Horses & Dreams tournament in Hagen, Germany in April.
