HAGEN, Germany, April 26, 2014–Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Deja won the Horses and Dream CDI4* Grand Prix for the Freestyle Saturday, their fifth straight victory since starting international Big Tour four months ago. Lars Petersen and Mariett that had to drop out of the World Cup Final a week ago placed third.
The score of 74.240 per cent for the Swedish Olympic rider and the 10-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare was their best result so far and gave the pair the win over the Netherlands’ Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Romanov on 73.340 per cent with the Florida-based Lars Petersen and Mariett third on 69.580 per cent.
Patrik and Deja (Silvano x Don Schufro) began their international career, at small tour, at this same event a year ago. The pair moved up to Grand Prix at Mechelen, Belgium last December and began this year at the Vidauban, France spring circuit. They won all four starts at both shows.
Lars, who is based in Wellington, Florida but rides for Denmark, had some expensive mistakes on Mariett, including in the one-tempi changes and a pirouette.
The 16-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, was the top placing combination in the World Cup North American League. However, after flying to Europe she was found to have an abscess on the right hind foot and was scratched from the global championship.
Lars said that Mariett had fully recovered from the injury and is ready for the Freestyle Sunday.
The pair are scheduled to compete at Hamburg at the end of May then go to the Danish championships to seek a place on Nations Cup teams that could put the pair in contention for a spot on the team for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France in August.
Catherine Haddad-Staller of the United States rode her Mane Stream Hotmail to eighth place on 68.720 per cent that she described as the “best test so far” on the 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding despite an issue in the canter.
Catherine of Califon, New Jersey was competing in Europe for the first time since returning to the U.S. at the end of 2012 after two decades based in Germany.
She returned with Hotmail for training and competition ahead of the American trials in Gladstone, New Jersey in mid-June to top contenders for the U.S. WEG team.
