HAGEN, Germany, April 25, 2014–Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH returned to competition after a winter break to lead a German European Championships team sweep of the top three places in the Horses and Dreams CDI4* Grand Prix Friday.
Kristina and the 13-year-old black Hanoverian stallion scored 78.480 per cent with Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH in second on 77.320 per cent and Fabienne Lütkemeier and D’Agostino FRH third on 76.400 per cent.
The German sweep came in a lineup of 25 combinations from 16 nations for the opening competition of the Horses and Dreams Meets Brazil CDI4*, the premier event opening the European summer circuit and intensely competitive as horses and riders pursue a start at the quarennial World Equestrian Games in France in August.
The return of Kristina and Desperados (De Niro x Wolkenstein II) to Hagen came after a year in which she took over the dressage operations at her family’s stud at the same time she was still at university, forcing the 27-year-old rider to end a long daily commute to her trainer, Jürgen Koschel, based next to these show grounds.
Kristina and Desperados, who were on the German Olympic silver medal medal team in London in 2012, on Friday posted their highest Grand Prix score in more than a year. After last summer’s European Championships in Denmark, the pair competed at Stuttgart, Germany in November and not since then until this event. The only combination from the 2013 European Championships team that was not here was Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW who were defending their World Cup title in France last weekend.
