WELLINGTON, Florida, Jan. 9, 2014–Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén rode Don Auriello in their 2014 debut competition to capture the curtain-raising Global Dressage Festival World Cup Grand Prix Thursday.
The pair, in their first show since arriving in Florida three weeks ago from Sweden, scored 77.760 per cent in an all-Scandinavian top three finish. The Florida-based Danish Olympian Lars Petersen and Mariett were runnerup on 72.880 per cent while fellow Dane Mikala Munter Gundersen and My Lady were third on 69.600 per cent.
One of the most keenly watched combinations was the American 2012 Olympic reserve partnership of Heather Blitz and the homebred Paragon who placed fourth on 68.020 per cent. The last CDI for the pair was at this same venue in April, 2013.
There was some buzz over the disparity in the scores for the Swedish combination–a high of 82.300 per cent from Swedish 5* judge Gustav Svalling and low scores of 75.300 per cent from Thomas Lang of Austria and 75.700 per cent from Sandra Hotz of the United States.
Tinne and the Hanoverian gelding (Don Davidoff x White Star) began their Grand Prix career in Florida in the winter of 2011 and have now become the fifth ranked combination in the world as well as on top of the World Cup Western European League rankings. The pair have four opportunities in Florida to add one more full World Cup points to their standings.
“He felt really good especially with the rain and the wind,” said Tinne after the competition and sporting a black eye that she sustained from walking into a glass door.
For Lars, who competed the Danish Warmblood mare for the first time since the Devon, Pennsylvania World Cup event in September, Mariett “continues to amaze me at 16 years old. And there’s stil more there.”
Lars took Mariett to Europe last summer to contest the Danish Chamionships and ride on his country’s team in the Nations Cup at the Rotterdam CHIO.
The Grand Prix Freestyle for which World Cup qualification points will count will be staged in what is beng billed as “Friday Night Stars.” The musical freestyle at the seven Global Dressage Festival CDIs will be held Friday night, with the main Winter Equestrian Festival jumping Grand Prix on Saturday nights.
