MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 28–Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW won the World Dressage Masters Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday but Holland’s new young star Danielle Heijkoop on Kingsley Siro almost stole the show with their best ever result and a second straight 80 per cent performance.

Damon Hill displayed none of the tension that marred the Grand Prix Friday and turned in a performance that earned Helen and the 13-year-old Westfalen stallion (Donnerhall x Rubinstein I) a score of 85.850 per cent and their fourth straight victory since the European Championships in summer where they were runnerup three times to Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro.

The 26-year-old Danielle and Kingsley Siro were scored at 81.300 per cent, a personal best and beating the 80.625 per cent attained 11 days earlier at London’s Olympia World Cup event. German Olympic veteran Ulla Salzgeber and Herzruf’s Erbe, returning after a lengthy injury timeout, produced a polished performance to place third on 81.075 per cent.

The ride by Danielle, coached by the legendary superstar Anky van Grunsven, on the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (Gribaldi x Hemmingway) placed her firmly in the top echelon of the sport. The breakthrough for the pair came when they qualified for the final 15 in the European Championship Freestyle, a year after moving out of the Under-25 ranks.

Their two second place finishes here followed two third placings at Olympia and a double victory at Oldenburg, Germany in November.

Patrick van der Meer of the Netherlands and Zippo won the Grand Prix Special on 66.479 per cent,  the Ukraine’s Inna Logutenkova on Vian Stallone was second on 66.063 per cent and Simon Missiaen of Belgium on Vradin was third on 65.646 per cent.
