LONDON, Dec. 16, 2013–Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro posted the second highest Grand Prix score ever of 84.851 per cent in winning the London Olympia World Cup Grand Prix Monday, just 1.091 per cent below the British double Olympic gold medal pair’s world record.
The result for Charlotte and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding eclipsed the 84.447 per cent the partnership posted at this same event a year ago but not enough to exceed the 85.942 per cent world record set at the European Championships in Herning, Denmark in August. Monday’s ride included nine marks of 10.
This iconic Christmas show was their first CDI since the Europeans and has been on their calendar for each of the three years the pair has competed at Grand Prix.
Edward Gal of the Netherlands and Glock’s Undercover were runnersup with 80.383 per cent, below their best result of 81.763 per cent the pair set at the Europeans. The Dutch rider has a special place in the hearts of British fans for his success with the black superstar stallion Totilas on which he still holds the world Freestyle record of 92.300 per cent set at this same show in 2009.
Danielle Heijkoop and Kingsley Siro, the rising Dutch stars, placed third with 76.383 per cent, that was the best result for the pair at any Grand Prix level.
Danielle and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding, coached by the legendary Anky van Grunsven, began their senior Grand Prix career 18 months ago after success in the Under-25 Division.
Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Digby placed fourth on 74.702 per cent. The horse was retired from Danish team competition at the Europeans.
In fifth place was Great Britain’s Michael Eilberg and Half Moon Delphi, logging a personal best Grand Prix score of 74.106 per cent that surpassed their previous high of 73.00 per cent at Hartpury, England in July.
Michael and the 11-year-old British-bred gray mare (Dimaggio x West Wall), completing their second year at Grand Prix, were the center of a scoring controvery in the Nations Cup at the European Championships in August because of a wide disparity in scores that could have dropped the Britain team to bronze instead of silver.
Finland’s Terhi Stegars and Axis TSF also posted a personal best of 72.021 per cent, nipping their previous high of 72.000 per cent at Paris just two weeks ago.
The Freestyle is scheduled for Tuesday night and will be the halfway mark in the World Cup Western European League calendar of eight competitions to qualify for the Final in Lyon, France in April.
