SYDNEY, Oct. 27–Sheridyn Ashwood and the 16-year-old Prestige VDL won the Australian Grand Prix Championship when the most successful pair Down Under this year captured the Special on Sunday to clinch the rider’s first national title.

Sheridyn, who has been riding for 33 of her 35 years, and the KWPN stallion (Silvano N x Goodtimes) scored 69.13 per cent that with the runnerup place in the Grand Prix was enough to give the rider her first championship.

She has never been on an Australian team or competed at a CDI outside her homeland but topped a lineup that included several Olympic and international competitors.

The pair became the top combination in Australia this year with seven victories and seven runnerup placings in 18 starts and is the second ranked Aussie pair  on the world rankings at No. 95 behind the German-based Olympian Lyndal Oatley and Sandro Boy.

Her victory dashed the hopes of Maree Tomkinson and Diamantina IV who won the Grand Prix, placed fifth in the Freestyle and scratched from the Special to repeat as national champions while Mary Hanna did not add to her five titles despite a Freestyle win that was the first victory she has notched with Sancette at a CDI in 3 1/2 years competing in Europe and Australia. It was, however, not enough to make up for their sluggish Grand Prix performance. She did not enter the Special.

In the Special on Sunday, Sheridyn and Prestige, initially trained by Edward Gal, beat out the seasoned combination of Heath Ryan and Regardez Moi who placed second on 67.46 per cent with Sue Hearn and Remmington in third on 65.00 per cent.

The format of the Australian championships–that was also a World Cup event but the sole representative from the Pacific League will be decided in a league final in December–is unusual in that the title is decided by results from the Grand Prix and the Special or the Grand Prix and Freestyle. Also, all three competitions are held on consecutive days with no break.
