ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 20–Denmark’s 23-year-old Anna Kasprzak notched her first World Cup win in riding Donnperignon to victory in the Grand Prix Freestyle before an ecstatic home crowd to kick off the Western European League season leading to the Final in Lyon, France next April.

The result for Anna of 80.575 per cent was the pair’s second highest for the Freestyle since the partnership began almost two years ago and that has taken them to the Olympics in London last summer and the European Championships at Herning, Denmark two months ago.

Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén and Don Auriello were not far behind on 80.075 per cent while Germany’s Isbabell Werth on Don Johnson FRH was third on 79.400 per cent.

“I hadn’t expected this result at all before heading to Odense,” Anna said. “It has been the best weekend, and yesterday I rode my best Grand Prix to date. Today I had some errors in the flying changes, but my ride followed the music very well. Donnperignon was very energetic today, although not as much as yesterday where it was almost too much. My goal is just to better myself from here. With regards to the World Cup season, I haven’t planned everything yet. Donnperignon gets to decide this.”

“Don Auriello was a bit tense yesterday but did much better today,” Tinne said. “Right now I’m working to adjust the small things during training. My plan in relation to the World Cup is to ride in Stuttgart and Stockholm.”

The Swedish Olympian is expected to base herself in Florida over the winter.

The performance on the 14-year-old Finnish Warmblood gelding (Donnerhall x Mozart), put Anna atop the the Western European League (WEL) standings with 20 points, tied with Norway’s Ellen Birgitt Farbrot who earned five points for a 12th place finish aboard Tailormade Akon Askelund, but she already had 15 points based on results from the Central European League that she was able to bring back to her home division.

Odense kicked off a slate of eight events in the WEL, the most competitive of the four leagues through which riders can compete for an invitation to the Final of the only annual global championship of dressage. The start of WEL coincided with the conclusion of the Central European League while the Pacific Asia League finishes up with a head-to-head competition in Australia in December and most of the competition in the North American League will be held in California and Florida through the winter.

In the Grand Prix Saturday, Anna and Donnperignon posted a personal best of 76.979 per cent that surpassed their previous highest result in the Grand Prix of 76.426 per cent at Stockholm last December.

Nanna Skodborg Merrald, who celebrated her 20th birthday less than two weeks ago, was another star of the show riding Millibar a score 78.325 per cent for fourth place in the first senior Grand Prix competition.

Nanna has ridden the 12-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by her family through Juniors, Young Riders and small tour before sweeping the Under-25 divisions at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany in June and at Herning during the European Championships in August.

The next leg takes place at Stuttgart, Germany Nov. 16.
