WROCKLAW, Poland, Sept. 15–Switzerland’s Marcela Krinke Susmelj and Smeyers Molberg won the World Cup Freestyle Sunday in the fifth of six Central European League events with the eight top placings only one percentage point apart.
Marcela and the 12-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Michellino x Rambo) scored 71.900 per cent to claim the lion’s share of the points available to the victor in the CEL event leading to the final in Lyon, France next April.
Spanish Olympian Morgan Barbançon, in only her fifth show on Heimlich Liebe that she began competing six months ago, was second on 71.675 per cent.
Australia’s Hayley Beresford on Jaybee Alabaster was third with 71.650 per cent. It was the fifth show since the German-based rider took over competing the Australian-bred horse at CDI at this competition a year ago.
The top placing CEL rider was Katarzyna Milczarek who placed fourth on Ekwador on 68.170 per cent in their bid to make it to the fourth World Cup Final for the Polish rider and her 13-year-old stallion.
Marcela and Smeyers Molberg, Switzerland’s top ranked combination and 30th in the world with both the World Cup Final and the European Championships on their resumé for 2013, has a head start on the highly competitive Western European League that begins its eight-event calendar in Odense, Denmark in a month. She earned 20 points that she can take to the WEL.
Morgan picked up 17 points for her second place finish while Australia’s Hayley Beresford, who competes in Western Europe and not the Pacific League for riders Down Under, earned 15 points.
Katarzyna Milczarek’s fourth place on Ekwador moved her into second place with 33 points on the CEL rankings behind Russia’s Tatiana Dorofeeva with 37 points.
The sixth and last event in the Central European League for the 2013/2014 season is scheduled for Minsk, Belarus in mid-October.
Two slots are reserved for the CEL for the World Cup Final, the only annual global championship in dressage.
The CEL rules allow for a League Final for a head-to-head competition to win an invitation to the world final but one has not yet been scheduled.
