WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 23–Ashlyn De Groot, who passed up a chance to take DG Dancing Queen to the World Young Horse Championships, won the five-year-old preliminary competition at the U.S. Young & Developing Horse Championships Thursday.
The 13 starting combintions earned the first 40 per cent of their overall scores with the remainder coming in the final test.
DG Bar Ranch’s DG Dancing Queen (Jazz x Junior) ridden by 19-year-old Ashlyn of Hanford, California was awarded 9.0 overall for a polished performance, earning 9.7 for trot, 9 for walk and 8.6 for canter.
The mare was judged to not only show great potential for the future in her gaits, but also with her rideability and harmonious work, for which she received 8.7 on submission.
Nadine Burberl of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey and Michael Davis’ Fashion Design OLD (Faustinus x De Niro) placed second 8.94 with 9.7 for trot, 9 for walk, 8.5 for canter and 8.5 for submission and 9 for overall impression.
Silva Martin of Unionville, Pennsylvania and Melinda Walton’s Hanoverian gelding Benefactor RRS (Bonheur x Rubenstein I) scored 8.62 for third place with 9.5 for trot, 9.0 for walk, 7.8 for canter, 8.3 for submission and 8.5 for overall impression.
Zandor, a nine-year-old KWPN gelding (Florencio x Amulet) ridden by Laura Wharton-Mero of Woodstock, Georgia won the Intermediaire II first phase of the Developing Grand Prix championship with a score of 66.974 per cent.
Kathy Priest of Versailles, Kentucky and her 10-year-old KWPN gelding Wild Dancer scored 65.570 for second and Katie Riley of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey and Zanzibar were third on 65.351 per cent.
