LIPICA, Slovenia, May 26–Elena Sidneva of Russia on Romeo-Star captured the Freestyle in the opening World Cup Central European League 2013/14 circuit Sunday in the first double victory for the pair since beginning their Grand Prix career at this same event three years ago.

Elena and the 12-year-old Hanoverian stallion (Romantic Star x Mister A) scored 72.400 per cent while two German combinations, Matthias Kempkes on Riccoletto at 71.550 per cent and Sylvia Zimmer on Broadway at 71.300 per cent, placing second and third, respectively.

In Saturday’s Grand Prix, Elena and Romeo-Star were first on 68.489 per cent with Matthias and Riccoletto seond on 67.872 per cent and Great Britain’s Anna Ross-Davies on Pegasus Mk third on 67.447 per cent. Anna and Pegasus dropped to eighth on 66.850 per cent in the Freestyle.

Elena is a seasoned international rider having competed at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000, the World Equestrian Games in Spain in 2002, five European Championships and two World Cup Finals, in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in 2002, Dusseldorf, Germany in 2004 and Las Vegas in 2005.

The Lipica World Cup event is one of six on the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) calendar for Central Europe this year–Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia and Brno, Czech Republic in June, Moscow and Wroclaw, Partynice, Poland in September and Minsk, Ratomka, Belarus in October.

Central Europe is one of four leagues–the others are Western Europe, North America and Pacific–established to provide qualifying circuits for the only annual global championship in dressage, the final of which will be held in Lyon, France April 17-21, 2014.
