WELLINGTON, Florida, Mar. 19–Caroline Roffman had her first competition ride on Sagacious HF without the horse “leaping” when the pair performed a Young Rider Grand Prix at a national show.
The pair were scored 70.000 per cent in a return to competition after turning to the Wellington-based Spanish Olympian Juan Matute for training help with the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (Welt Hit II x Judith x Cocktail).
The horse appeared relaxed in the ride before a single judge.
Sagacious, owned by Hyperion Farm, won team gold and individual silver medals at the 2007 Pan American Games, at small tour, when ridden by Lauren Sammis of South Orange, New Jersey, in an emotional performance as the owner was terminally ill with cancer.
The black horse enjoyed initial success after moving to Grand Prix.
Caroline, based in Wellington, took over the ride last year.
“This was the first ride at a show without leaping,” said the 24-year-old rider who was suffering a bad head cold.
She said the plan for now is to competing in national shows.
