American Young Rider star Brandi Roenick will compete Pan American Games gold medal mount Weltino’s Magic when she travels with Steffen Peters to Europe with renewal of a lease that could run into 2014.
“I’m ecstatic,” the 18-year-old Brandi said Tuesday night confirming that an agreement had been reached with Magic’s owners, Jen and Bruce Hlavacek of Las Vegas.
Brandi rode Weltino’s Magic, a 10-year-old Westfalen gelding (Weltino x Diva x Diamond Boy) to 2012 North American Young Rider team and individual gold medals. The Young Rider World Cup was a goal for 2012, but the championship was canceled. Magic was ridden by Steffen to team and individual gold medals at the 2011 Pan American Games which are at small tour.
The lease renewal came a week after Brandi moved from her home in suburban Phoenix, Arizona, to work fulltime at the equestrian center of Steffen and his wife, Shannon, in San Diego, California.
As an effrt to immerse herself in dressage, Brandi will work in California and travel with Steffen and Legolas to the World Dressage Masters in Florida at the end of January and then for a second CDI5* in Florida in April before heading to Europe for German shows at Hagen in April, Wiesbaden in May and Aachen in June.
She will compete Magic in open small tour classes.
The new lease began Tuesday and Brandi said it runs at least through the U.S. Intermediate championships in Kentucky in October.
“If all goes well we will continue into the 2014 show season,” she said.
Brandi described the experience of competing Magic as “a dream” and “I can’t say enough about how good he was for me.”
It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, a huge jump in my career path.”
Brandi had success with both her own horses, Pretty Lady on whom she won team and individual golds as a Junior in the 2008 North American championships and team gold and individual silver as a Young Rider in 2011, and capturing Young Rider team gold on Nobel in 2010.
