LONDON, Dec. 17–Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro set a world record score of 84.447 per cent for the Grand Prix at London Olympia Monday night in their first competition since winning team and individual gold medals at the summer Olympics and eight months after claiming the record for the Special.
The record beat the previous best of of 84.045 per cent established by Edward Gal and Totilas at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 and came in the Grand Prix at the World Cup event at the International Horse Show in London.
The 27-year-old rider and the 10-year-old KWPN gelding (Negro x Maifleur x Gerschwin) who this year became the first British combination to hold the world’s No. 1 ranking, was awarded 12 marks of 10 by the five-judge panel.
The performance was dominating–almost eight percentage points higher than the second place, German star Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH on 76.362 per cent and Edward Gal and his Olympic mount, Glock’s Undercover, on 76.128 per cent.
And Carl Hester, Charlotte’s trainer, mentor, part-owner of Valegro and Olympic team mate, rode his Uthopia to a score of 71.128 per cent to place sixth.
Charlotte and Valegro established the Grand Prix Special world record of 88.022 per cent at Horses & Dreams in Hagen, Germany in April this year as preparation for the Olympics in her homeland where they won all three phases of the dressage competition–the Grand Prix (83.663 per cent) and the Special (83.226 per cent) that made up the Nations Cup competition and the Freestyle (90.089 per cent).
The Freestyle, the only record still held by Edward and Totilas, will be staged Tuesday night for points to count toward the Western European League of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Final scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden in April.
The Freestyle record of 92.300 per cent by the Dutch combination was set aptly at this same event three years ago almost to the day, Dec. 15, 2009.
Charlotte has not announced whether she will seek to start in the World Cup Final as both Valegro and Uthopia are for sale. This was the first of the eight events in the Western European League in which Charlotte and Valegro have started. Olympia is the fifth qualifier.
The British duo’s climb to the top began in March, 2011 with the first international CDI.
In the 21 months since, the pair competed at 10 shows before the Olympics–from Hartpury, England, just minutes from their base at Carl Hester’s Gloucestershire training center, across the Atlantic to Florida’s winter circuit to Horses & Dreams meets Great Britain at Hagen in April where they set the world record for the Grand Prix Special.
