LYON, France, Nov. 2–Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival posted another personal best score less than two-thirds of a point below 90 per cent to capture the Equitá Grand Prix Freestyle Friday night, the second straight Reem Acra FEI World Cup victory for the Olympic silver medal pair.

By winning the two World Cup Western European League events Adelinde and the 15-year-old KWPN gelding (Jazz x Fidora x Ulft) have fulfilled the requirement to start in the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden, next April where she aims to win her third straight title.

Admitting she has “changed a bit as a rider to stress harmony, self-carriage, softness and suppleness I love that everybody else sees it.” Her score of 89.375 per cent in the second of eight World Cup events in the Western European League surpassed her previous high of 88.839 per cent when the pair won gold at the European Championships last year.

And the freestyle performance came just a day after she set a personal best score of 82.766 per cent in the Grand Prix.

The winning result was more than six percentage higher than the 83.350 per cent awarded Italy’s Valentina Truppa and Eremo del Castegna for second place with the 26-year-old Kristina Sprehe and her German Olympic team mount Desperados FRH third om 82.250 per cent.

The result for Kristina and the 11-year-old black Hanoverian stallion (De Niro x Wie Musik x Wolkenstein II) drew loud applause from the crowd of 6,000 that packed the arena as she placed eighth in the Grand Prix Thursday when Desperados spooked twice.

She explained later that the horse bred for eight weeks after the Olympics and was too fresh in the indoor arena. In a similar situation a year ago after sher ended her Under-25 career, Desperados had more time to recover from his breeding schedule.

The runnerup place for the Italian pair that competed as individuals at the London Olympics in August gave them all 20 points to move them up to second place in the Western European standings with 37 points, behind Marcela Krinke Susmelj of Switzerland.

However, the Dutch combination owned the night as they have in their two shows since the London Games where they won team bronze and individual silver. Although the pair slipped to second in the world rankings behind Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, Adelinde and the big chestnut have been the most successful since then.

Asked about a remark by Wim Ernes, Holland’s new dressage coach, that he has to start looking for replacements for this pair and Salinero who was retired after being ridden in three Olympics by Anky van Grunsven, Adelinde feigned surpise with a smile.

“You can’t replace him yet,” she said.

“He’s 15 but he just feels like he’s seven years old. He’s quite sharp and as long as he stays like this we’ll keep on showing.”

Reminded that Parzival was extremely difficult at age seven, she said “This is easier now. I don’t want to think about the time he was seven,” when he was “quite spooky and scared of other horses in the arena.”

Kristina said that in addition to eight weeks of breeding after the Olympics, it was the first indoor show for a long time.

“He was fresh and that is good,” she said, “but he was not so relaxed. I rode him this morning and he was more relaxed than yesterday. Today he had fun in the competition. He was really concentrated.”

Isabelle Judet of France, president of the five-member ground jury, described the ride for Adelinde as containing “no weak points.” Her freestyle, she said, “is a perfect piece of work.”
