ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 21–Adelinde Cornelissen rode Jerich Parzival to their highest ever non-championship score in winning the Grand Prix Freestyle at the 2012/13 inaugural World Cup event Sunday, the first of two performances needed to go to the Final to seek her third straight title.

Edward Gal, her London Olympic team mate, finished second on Blue Hors Romanov to collect the top points in the start of the series of eight World Cup Western European League events.

Adelinde and the 15-year-old KWPN gelding (Jazz x Fidoria x Ulft) scored 88.175 per cent, the third highest score for the pair in almost six years of their Grand Prix career, surpassed only by 88.839 per cent in taking individual gold at the 2011 European Championships and 88.196 per cent for silver at the summer Games in August.

The result of 80.650 per cent for Edward and the 12-year-old Oldenburg stallion (Rohdiamant x Rumirell x Grundstein II) was by far their best performance in only their fourth show since beginning their CDI partnership this year.

Denmark’s Anna Kasprzak was competing in their first show since the Olympic debut of the 22-year-old rider and her family’s 13-year-old Donnperignon (Donnerhall x Montserrat x Mozart 1179) and finished third on 77.825 per cent, after placing second in the Grand Prix to become the highest scoring hometown couple.

The result for Adelinde was all the more remarkable for the fact that the 33-year-old rider is altering her riding technique.

Prompted by the words of Olympic ground jury President, Great Britain’s Stephen Clarke, who said after she finished behind British gold medalist Charlotte Dujardin at Greenwich Park this summer that Parzival needed to show “more lightness and self-carriage” in order to beat Valegro, Adelinde is working on just that.

As she said, “it’s getting better and better, and it feels really amazing.”

There were, though, what she described as “some miscommunications.” in both the Grand Prix and the Freestyle.

“I’m doing things a little differently,” she said, “so of course sometimes Parzival doesn’t clearly understand yet.  He says ‘what are you doing now?’ like going from passage to canter it is slightly different and he went into walk instead of canter.  It takes time to make a change, but I’m really happy with him and how much relaxation he is showing.”

It is all a long way from the tense and worried gelding who, just a few short years ago, so often lost his nerve when under the spotlight. “He’s enjoying it so much more,” she explained.

She had been planning to give Parzival a break when the Olympics were over, “but he didn’t like it, he hated it after a week of watching the other horses going out to do things–he wants to work and he loves the attention and the crowds these days, even the prize-giving!”

This event in the West European League is one of four circuits–Central Europe, North America and Pacific are the others–for the the only annual global dressage championship, the 2013 Final of which will be in Gothenborg, Sweden six months from now.

The competition for Adelinde and Parzival is the first of only two World Cup events the pair need to compete in–they get no points–to insure their start as defending champion. The pair won the World Cup, their first ever global title, at Leipzig, Germany in 2011 and repeated at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, this year.
