DEL MAR, California, Sept. 15–Steffen Peters rode Legolas to a near personal best score at Del Mar National, the first competition for the pair since winning the U.S. Grand Prix Championship three months ago.

Steffen and the 10-year-old Westfalen gelding (Laomedon x Furstin x Florestan II) who has now become his top international mount since the retirement of Ravel after the Olympics in London scored 79.6 per cent at the national competition before two U.S. judges, David Schmutz of Californa and Beverl Rogers of Arizona.

“He feels stronger and, most important, more supple and a bit more uphill,” Steffen said of the horse that was bought by Akiko Yamazaki as a successor to Ravel that was competed for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, was the 2009 World Cup champion and is the only American combination to capture the CDIO title at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany.

Since arriving in the United States from Germany last Christmas, Steffen and Legolas have ridden in five national and CDI competitions in California as well as the U.S. championships in New Jersey. Their highest Grand Prix result was also at a national competition, 80.213 per cent in California.
