AACHEN, Germany, July 6–Isabell Werth rode Don Johnson to their first victory this year in the World Equestrian Festival CDI4* Olympic Grand Prix Special before a sold-out stadium under lights Friday night, but was sharply critical of the low marks from the judges as she had hoped to impress the German Olympic selectors watching the performance ahead of the team announcement.
Isabell, the winner of four team and one individual Olympic gold medals, and the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Don Frederico x Werona x Warkant) scored 73.867 per cent in a ride that showed none of the tension from the previous day’s Grand Prix in which she finished third.
Germany’s Monica Theodorescu and Whisper, the winner of the Grand Prix Thursday, was second on 72.978 per cent and Denmark’s Olympic veteran Anne van Olst who is also fighting for a place on Denmark’s team for London was third on Exquis Taikoen with 72.378 per cent.
Several horses were resistant, apparently affected by the atmosphere of the packed 5,000-seat stadium.
Not so Isabell and Don Johnson, who last posted a win in December, 2011, but Friday night described the judge’s marks as “much too little.”
Two judges ranked her first, one second, one third and one fourth with scores ranging from 76 per cent down to 71 per cent.
“This is a tragedy that must be honestly stated,” she said.
The ride, she said, “was a real step forward. He was a little hectic in the passage, but he’s also not a sleepy head. Now we are clearly on the right track. I am really happy with him.”
Isabell said she expects the Olympic team of three and one individuals will be made of the four riders on the CDIO Nations Cup team–Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW, Kristina Sprehe and Desperados, Anabel Balkenhol and Dablino and Dorothee Schneider and Diva Royal. Totilas was witdrawn from consideration when rider Matthias Alexander Rath reported he was still too ill with mononucleosis.
She said if she does not go to London for the dressage beginning Aug. 2 she will compete at the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden, saying half-jokingly, “my young horses even let me survive those judges’ decisions.”
Earlier, Germany’s Sanneke Rothenberger and Deveraux OLD won the Under-25 Intermediaire II with a score of 73.684 per cent before a crowd that filled two-thirds of the 5,000-seat stadium.
