Steffen Peters and Legolas have moved into the top 20 in the world rankings in five months since the 10-year-old Westfalen gelding joined Ravel in California.
The latest International Equestrian Federation rankings show that Steffen and Legolas (Laomedon x Furstin x Florestan II) ranked 17th, up from 89th place a month earlier, and two places behind Ravel, ranked 15th in the world.
Legolas is competing over the next two weeks in the U.S. Grand Prix championships in Gladstone, New Jersey, while Ravel is in California because the 2008 Olympic, 2010 World Equestrian Games double bronze medalist and 2009 World Cup champion mount has been excused from the American Olympic selection trials.
Steffen and Legolas have competed in only four CDIs, all in California, since Akiko Yamazaki bought the horse from Germany late in 2011 as a backup to Ravel, which she also owns. Legolas has won all eight classes in those four events.
Anky van Grunsven and Salinero, her 2008 Olympic gold medal mount now aged 18, was ranked 18th, the first time horse had been in the top 20 in almost two years.
