BALVE, Germany, June 1–Matthias Alexander Rath rode Totilas to victory in the German Championshps Grand Prix Friday, while Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW and Kristina Sprehe and Desperados were not far behind and all above 80 per cent.
The panel of five German judges at this national competition which, with the World Equestrian Festival at Aachen a month from now, will lead to selection of Germany’s team for the Olympics in London gave Matthias and the 12-year-old black stallion 83.234 per cent, near the personal best of 83.809 per cent posted at the Hagen CDI4* at the end of April.
Helen and the 12-year-old Damon Hill , second in the World Cup Final in The Netherlands in April, were second on 81.489 per cent while the rising young star Kristina Sprehe and Desperados were third on 80.383 per cent.
All three of the top combinations were awarded multiple scores of 10–11 for Matthias and Totilas, five for Helen and Damon Hill and four for Kristina and Desperados.
Anabel Balkenhol on Dablino placed fourth with 76.298 per cent and Isabell Werth, the most successful Olympic dressage rider, rode El Santo NRW to fifth place on 75.404 per cent.
