LOXAHATCHEE, Florida, Mar. 24–Lars Petersen, the Florida-based Danish Olympian, rode Mariett to victory in the Olympic Grand Prix Special at his IHS Champions Cup CDI3* Saturday, posting the best score so far in the handful of national and CDI events the pair have competed in.

On Willano, he notched another win at small tour with a score of 71.491 per cent in the Intermediaire I CDI1*.

In the Special, Lars and the 14-year-old Danish Warmblood mare (Come Back II x Zendi x Sidney) that he owns with Marcia Pepper, scored 70.667 per cent with Eliana Cordia van Reese of Wellington, Florida, and Jewel’s Adelante second on 67.356 per cent and Canada’s David Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital were third on 67.200 per cent.

The improving scores for Mariett may be too late for the pair to be a prospect for this year’s Olympics, but might be candidates for the European Championships in Denmark next year and possibly the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, in 2014.

Lars, however, would not speculate beyond the Grand Prix that he plans to compete in at the CDIO3* in Wellington in mid-April.

“We are getting better and better together,” he said. “But it takes some time for us to figure each other out. Some one once said, ‘from your first Grand Prix it takes two years to be really good at it’.”

Having trained about a dozen horses from youngsters to Grand Prix and taken them to Olympics, WEGs and World Cup Finals, he knows something about the process.

“At this stage,” he said, “we’re getting mileage.

“She has all the potential. I love the horse, she is really good.”
