DORTMUND, Germany, Mar. 10–Germany’s Kristina Sprehe, who six months ago was competing in the Under-25 division. rode Desperados to victory in the Meggle Prix Grand Prix Special Saturday, with a score of 81.978 per cent with Great Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris the runnerup combination.
The win was the biggest for Kristina, 25, and the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding (De Niro x Wie Musik x Wolkenstein II) over a field that included top Germans Ulla Salzgeber and Herzruf’s Erbe and Isabell Werth and Warum Nicht as well as the British combination.
Laura and “Alf,” as she calls Mistral Hojris, scored 81.044 per cent. Ulla and Herzi were third with 79.000 per cent.
Kristina and Desperados have competed in only a handful of senior tournaments since beginning their international campaign last summer.
The pair were active in Under-25 competitions, including the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, and Rotterdam during the European Championships, a division created to help with the transition from young riders to the senior levels.
Kristina was a member of the gold medal team at the European Pony Championships in 2003, won team silver and gold and individual bronzes as a junior at the European Championships in 2003 and 2004, and in 2006 and 2007 was a member of the Young Rider teams that won gold and silver as well as individual silver and bronze medals.
The five judges were unanimous in their placings of Kristina and Desperadoes first and Laura and Mistral Hojris second.
