MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 28–Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival moved halfway to defending their World Cup title Wednesday, when the pair easily won the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Mechelen qualifier, while Sweden’s Patrik Kittel consolidated his position atop the Western European League standings.
In their first competition since winning the two individual gold medals at the European Championships last August, the Dutch combination scored 85.325 per cent that eclipsed their score that won them the World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany, in April, the first global title for the pair. The combination is ranked No. 1 in the world.
As title holders, Adelinde and the KWPN gelding (Jazz x Ulft) who will be 15 years old at the time of the Final in ‘s-Hertgenbosch, The Netherlands, April 18-22 are required to complete two World Cup qualifiers. Mechelen was the first and Amsterdam in late January will be the second.
“For me, this is really just the start of the season,” Adelinde said. “My main aim for 2012 of course is London (Olympic Games), but I will compete in Amsterdam and at the Final. Parzival felt very good today.”
Patrik Kittel rode his European Championship bronze medal mount Watermill Scandic H.B.C. in this qualifier, for a score of 80.050 per cent. He, too, had not competed Scandic, a 12-year-old stallion, since the Europeans.
Scandic is the third horse that Patrik has ridden in the WEL qualifiers–Mechelen was the sixth of nine–and moved to the top of the standings after placing on the Australian-owned Toy Story at Frankfurt earlier this month.
Germany’s Nadine Capellmann on her 2008 Olympic team gold medal mount Elvis VA was third on 76.950 per cent. At age 15, Elvis was the oldest horse in the competition.
“He did a good test,” Nadine said, “and he feels really good. A few seasons ago he just didn’t feel so great, but now he feels like he has come back again to his very best.”
