FRANKFURT, Germany, Dec. 17–Isabell Werth rode Don Johnson to victory in the International Festhallen World |Cup Grand Prix Saturday, posting a personal best in only the sixth competition since the pair began Grand Prix nine months ago.
Isabell, Germany’s most decorated dressage rider, and the 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Don Frederico x Werona x Warkant) scored 75.085 per cent with compatriots Monica Theodorescu and Whisper second on 73.362 per cent and Dorothee Schneider and Diva Royal third on 72.851 per cent.
The previous best for Isabell and Don Johnson at Grand Prix was 74.723 per cent in Stuttgart a month ago.
Don Johnson could become the top mount for Isabell with the retirement of her Olympic gold medal partner Satchmo also at Stuttgart. The piaffe and passage of Don Johnson appears more superior to her other 10-year-old, El Santo NRW, which she rode on the silver medal German team at the European Championships in Rotterdam.
The Freestyle is scheduled for Sunday for which points will count toward qualifying for the World Cup Final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, in mid-April.
Frankfurt is the fifth of nine World Cup qualifiers in the Western European League.
If Isabell wins the Freestyle, she would earn 20 points and vault her to tie with current leader Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfven of Sweden with 52 points who is currently atop the standings.
However, Sweden’s Patrik Kittel is competing here in Frankfurt and is ranked second with 41 points. With a high finsh Sunday, he could take over the lead in the standings.
The final of the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, the hotly contested German championship for developing horses, was won by Carola Koppelmann on Desperado OLD with 75.450 per cent.
Isabell and Flatley 2 were second on 73.350 per cent and Oliver Oelrich and Rock Forever NRW third on 73.000 per cent.
