SALZBURG, Austria, Dec. 2–Anky van Grunsven rode Salinero to the pair’s best Grand Prix score in almost three years to win the qualifier for the Freestyle at the Pappas Amadeus Indoor Horse Show CDI4* Friday.
“Sali felt great today. I think he is in his second youth,” Anky declared after the ride for 78.149 per cent on the 17-year-old Hanoverian gelding on whom she has won two Olympic individual gold medals, four of her nine World Cup titles and a world championship.
She is seeking to be a member of the Dutch team at next year’s London Olympics for her seventh Games and third on Salinero, if successful, equal to the three Olympics in which she rode Bonfire.
Friday’s result by Anky and Salinero (Salieri x Luna x Lungau) was the best since winning with 78.255 per cent in the Grand Prix at home in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, in March, 2009 and came in only their third international competition of the year, the same number as in 2010 when she skipped dressage competition at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky to compete in reining after Salinero was injured. And it was the best score by a Dutch combination in 2011 aside from world No. 1 Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival.
Germany’s Anja Plönzke on her 12-year-old gelding Le Mont d’Or was second on 72.085 per cent and Japan’s Yuko Kital on Golden Coin–leading the rankings for her geographic group for an individual berth at the London’s Olympics next year among combinations not from a nation that has already qualified a team– was third on 68.617 per cent.
All five judges placed the Dutch pair first, with Beatrice Büchler from Switzerland awarding the combination more than 80 per cent.
