TORONTO, Nov. 11–Ashley Holzer and Breaking Dawn won their first Grand Prix Freestyle in sweeping the C$40,000 (US$39,220) Royal Winter Fair World Cup event Thursday night.

Ashley and Breaking Dawn, formerly known as Ultiems Flemming (Akribori x Evelibe x L.Ronald) and co-owned by Ashley and P.J. Rizvi, scored 73.475 per cent in the Freestyle after winning the Grand Prix Wednesday in which only six combinations, all Canadian, started the event.

Victoria Winter and Proton, a 17-year-old Baden-Wurttemburger gelding, scored 69.400 per cent for second, as she was in the Grand Prix, while Jacqueline Brooks with her veteran Gran Gesto were third on 68.925 per cent.

Ashley rode to music  from the movie soundtrack “How to Train Your Dragon.”

“I am over the moon about our performance,” Ashley said. “He was doing Prix St. Georges just three months ago, and he has really been on the accelerated program to become a Grand Prix horse.

“It’s such an incredible feeling to have a horse that you know hasn’t done this before–to come in and not only step up and do the job he did, in the atmosphere he was in–but to do it in a way that he was really working with me and happy to be trying his best instead of freaking out,” said Ashley who lives in New York.

“We all know it’s a tough venue to work in! He just amazed me in so many ways. He showed me that he’s got what it takes. And not only does he have what it takes, he LOVES doing it. No matter how loud the crowd cheered, he was soaking it in and feeding off it.”
