DONAUESCHINGEN, Germany, Sept. 25–Ulla Salzgeber and Herzruf’s Erbe posted a personal best score of 78.021 per cent in winning the Grand Prix Special at Donaueschingen CDI4* Sunday, narrowly edging out Anky van Grunsven and her 17-year-old Salinero whose result was the best for the Special since before the pair won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Ulla was placed first by two of the five judges while the other three gave the nod to Anky and Salinero with a combined score of 77.958 per cent, that was the best for the pair in the Special since scoring 78.880 at De Steeg in The Netherlands in June, 2008, before the Beijing Games.
“Salinero was great!.” Anky said after the ride Sunday. “Too bad I made two little mistakes in the one-tempis.”
Germany’s Kristina Sprehe on Desperados, among the top Under-25 combinations in Europe, was third on 75.000 per cent.
Ulla and Herzruf’s Erbe finished first in the Grand Prix on Saturday, while Anky and Salinero were second.
Both Olympic gold medal riders, Ulla on Rusty and Anky with individual gold medals on Salinero from the 2008 Beijing and 2004 Athens Games and on Bonfire at Sydney in 2000, have shown only sporadically this year.
Ulla and and the 12-year-old Rhinelander gelding went to four competitions over winter and spring before taking a break and Anky and Salinero once only, in Sweden in July after a break of more than a year while Salinero was recovering from an injury and Anky focused on her other passion, reining, in which she competed at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky last year.
The scores for Anky and Salinero at this event have been second only to Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival among the Dutch elite squad this year.
Ulla has been competing Herzi (Herzruf x Charisma x Caletto I) at Grand Prix for more than three years. The Grand Prix Special at Aachen. Germany, in 2009 was one of their low points when the gelding retired after going lame on his right hind leg.
She next will head to the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, to coach Constanza Jaramillo Calderón, who will ride Wakana on the Colombian team. She bought the 11-year-old mare from Ulla this summer and has been training in Germany.
