The Netherlands team for the European Championships of Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, Hans Peter Minderhoud and Exquis Nadine, Edward Gal and Sisther de Jeu and Sander Marijnissen with Moedwil was announced Monday by coach Sjef Janssen who admitted the success of the 2009 and 2007 championships was unlikely to be repeated in Rotterdam.

“This is the strongest team that we currently have,” Sjef said of the squad that includes the world’s top ranked combination in Adelinde and Parzival and veteran riders and horses, but is without the Dutch star horse from 2009, Totilas.

The championships are held once every two years and are scheduled for Aug. 17-21.

The German team led by Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas and Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW and Great Britain’s squad of Laura Bechtolsheimer on Mistral Hojris, Carl Hester on Uthopia and Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro are favorites to battle for gold.

–Adelinde and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding (shown above after winning the Grand Special at the 2009 European Championships) were on the 2009 Dutch squad which won the Nations Cup and the pair won the Grand Prix Special and silver in the Freestyle behind Edward Gal and Totilas.

–Edward and the 12-year-old mare by Gribaldi were on the Dutch team at the CDIO in Aachen, Germany, last month and competed in their first World Cup Final in Leipzig in April.

–Hans Peter and the 16-year-old mare partnered at the 2008 Olympics, the 2007 European Championships and World Cup Finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2008, Las Vegas in 2009 and Leipzig in 2011.

–Sander and the 17-year-old gelding have competed at Grand Prix for three years with victories at some of Europe’s top shows but the pair have never made an appearance at a continental or world championship.
