LEXINGTON, Kentucky, July 30–Isabelle Leibler and Watson 108 representing Region 8 won the North American Young Rider Championship musical freestyle gold medal Saturday night after a severe storm temporarily shut down the Kentucky Horse Park part way through the Junior Rider freestyle competition.
Isabelle and Watson, who earlier in the championship won individual gold and team bronze, scored 74.00 per cent for the closing night victory aboard the 14-year-old Westphalen gelding to music from the movie “ET.”
Silver medal went to Chase Hickok and Palermo from Region 1 won silver with a score of 70.725 per cent and Region 1 team mate Mackinzie Pooley and Jonkara won bronze on 70.004 per cent.
Isabelle said of the freestyle to music from her favorite movie,
“This is the third time we’ve performed it in competition, so we’re going through the ropes, trying to see how it ends up, and how the striding work. Today, he just felt like he was right there for me and he had my back. He was ready for everything. I was so excited to have a feeling that my horse was there with me… it was the most amazing feeling.”
“He was right there with me, and we fought for every point. It was a stressful week, but he was a trooper the whole time.”
In the Junior division, Sarah Loewen of Manitoba, Canada, aboard Ricardo rode as an individual from Manitoba, Canada, to win gold with a score of 69.675 per cent.
Sarah and “Ricky,” a 13-year-old KWPN, performed to big band music.
Team Canada West’s Monica Houweling and Stentano were in the ring twice today as the show was suspended in the middle of their first performance, but they returned several hours later to earn 67.70 per cent for the silver medal.
“The second time in the ring he was pretty tired, so I just pushed for everything I had,” she said. “He was super tired, but I’m really proud. He just dug deep and pulled it together.”
Julia Burtt and Aaron IV of Region I won bronze with a score of 67.15 per cent.
