LEXINGTON, Kentucky, July 27–The North American Junior & Young Rider Championships on opening day Wednesday were marked by controversy over wildly different dressage scores–as much as 10 percentage points apart–a veterinary check on gravel different from jumpers and eventers on competition footing and enforcement of “too much bling” that forced one rider to switch from a safety helmet to a top hat.
The championships of dressage–the largest component of the championships–eventing, jumping and reining began with the junior and young rider championships in the same arena that hosted the World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park last year.

The scores of the Junior competition showing the wide disparity in judging are below.
About one-fourth of the junior rides showed a difference of at least six per cent between the highest and lowest scores for the ride.
The vet check of dressage horses was conducted on a gravel track while the vet check for jumping and eventing horses was performed on the same footing used in competition. No organizer explained the difference in the vet check procedures for the three disciplines.
One of the controversial decision was that of Cara Whitham of Canada, an Olympic-level judge and technical delegate for the competition, who stopped a rider on the entry ramp to the competition arena and ruled they not wear a safety helmet with pink bling. The rider offered another helmet with crystal decoration. The TD refused to allow the rider to enter the arena and insisted on a top hat.
FEI rules, which apply to this competition, do not appear to specify adornment on a rider’s helmet.
