FALSTERBO, Sweden, July 8–Patrik Kittel, a hometown favorite, and Watermill Scandic H.B.C. won the World Dressage Masters Grand Prix Friday beating one of his idols, Anky van Grunsven who was competing with her 17-year-old Olympic gold medal partner Salinero who has been absent from the show ring for 15 months with an injury.

Patrik also notched his first ever double Grand Prix at an international competition when he rode Toy Story owned by his wife’s family to victory in the CDI3* earlier in the day.

The Swedish combination who train with Anky’s husband, Sjef Janssen, was placed first by all five judges with a mark of 75.128 per cent. Anky and Salinero were second with 71.298 per cent and Germany’s Anja Plönzke and Le Mont d’Or were third on 70.596 per cent while Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello were fourth on 70.043 per cent.

The USA’s Catherine Haddad-Staller on Winyamaro who was given a rest after the World Cup Final in April came fifth on 68.255 per cent.

Neither Patrik nor Anky were happy with their rides, but for totally different reasons.

“This was his third top show in recent months,” Patrik said of the 12-year-old KWPN stallion, “and he is getting better and better. But there is three, four, five per cent more in there to get out.

“If I had done this test a couple of years ago I would have been so happy I would have wet my pants,” he joked. “But now there is so much more he can do that I did not get out of him.”

Anky said she was “very disappointed in my own riding. I just sat there and did not do enough.

“I will kick myself in the butt and try to do better.

“The poor guy had to do it all by himself. It was lucky for me he remembered the test because he did it by himself.”
