BALVE, Germany, June 18–Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas collected 12 marks of 10 on their way to a convincing win with a score of 83.417 per cent in the Grand Prix Special Saturday and take the German Championships in only their third competition.
As with Friday’s Grand Prix–which coincidentally was the second anniversary of the first international Grand Prix competition, with Edward Gal of The Netherlands–Isabell Werth and the 10-year-old El Santo NRW was second on 81.375 per cent to become vice champion. Anabel Balkenhol on Dablino was third with 79.000 per cent and Christoph Koschel and Donnperignon fourth with 77.833 per cent.
For the movement of 12 to 15 steps of piaffe, Matthias and the 11-year-old black stallion were awarded four 10s and one 9.
El Santo is the youngest horse in the competition and has competed at only six international competitions since starting his Grand Prix career in February, 2010.
After the championship was determined by the Special, Isabell said: “We have now in Germany again a great starting point with four to five pairs internationally, and there are some horses capable of more than 80 percent in competition and that is good.”
This is not an international competition and all five judges are German. The championships are, however, closely watched as an indicator of the state of German dressage, and more so this year as it was only the third show for Matthias and Totilas since Totilas was acquired by Paul Schockemöhle and Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff, Matthias’s stepmother, following last year’s World Equestrian Games.
The results at Balve determined the German team for the CHIO in Aachen in mid-July, which in turn is the selection competition for the European Championships in Rotterdam at the end of August.
Matthias and Totilas have competed three times, all of them this month–at Munich and Wiesbaden and now Balve, while the horse maintains a three-times-a-week breeding schedule.
The pair will perform their first musical freestyle Sunday.
The only top German combination missing from Balve is Ulla Salzgeber and Herze’s Erbe. The German Olympic gold medalist had to scratch when she developed an upset stomach. Ulla and Herzruf’s Erbe won the Munich CDI5* Freestyle earlier this month with a personal best score.
