HAGEN, Germany, May 4–Horses & Dreams Meets Germany started Wednesday with Brigitte Wittig on Balmoral W the victors in the Prix St. Georges CDI3*, with Australia’s Hayley Beresford on Belissimo NRW the top placed non-German in fourth place in their first international competition since young horse classes six years ago.
Brigitte and the eight-year-old Balmoral scored 73.476 per cent with Hubertus Schmidt on Imperio 3 second on 73.316 per cent and Holga Finken on Divertimento third on 71.316 per cent.
The so-called “little Aachen” as Horses & Dreams has been dubbed has attracted dressage and jumper competitors from around the world, including triple World Equestrian Games triple silver medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer heading up a contingent from Great Britain, WEG competitors Hayley Beresford and her team mate Lyndal Oatley, America’s top scoring World Cup rider Jan Ebeling and Canada’s Belinda Trussell as well as a host of top Europeans.
Totilas, the superstar stallion that was bought from The Netherlands by Paul Schockemöhle whose Performance Sales International stages this competition, was to have made his first competition appearance with new rider Matthias Alexander Rath that led to a sellout of the Grand Prix classes. However, the horse sustained a hoof abscess and was scratched.
The appearance of Belissimo, a top German stallion ridden by the German-based Australian, sparked speculation because of the horse’s success in young horse classes but as a 12-year-old services 800 mares a year.
Drawing a lot of attention was a top of the line Mercedes-Benz SUV. not a horse but lots of horsepower–0 to 60 miles (100km) an hour in 5.7 seconds and a deep-throated roar that would give joy to a Harley Davidson owner. The color was… interesting.
An event attended by several hundred people was a service of Muslims, Jews and Christians.
