WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, Jan. 9–Devon Kane began riding Don Angelo just a month ago for a possible attempt at a place on the U.S. team for the Pan American Games, and on Sunday passed their first test with a win in the Intermediaire I at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge I.

Devon and the 11-year-old Oldenburg stallion owned by Diamante Farms of Wellington, Florida scored 73.158 per cent for the win in the field of 18 starters. Dorie Addy-Crow of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on Rotterdam was second on 70.526 per cent and 1999 Pan Am team gold medalist Linda Alicki also of Wellington on Donates was third on  70.00 per cent.

The 24-year-old Devon said that by the end of the Prix St. Georges Saturday she felt a breakthrough with Don Angelo and he started from that point in the Intermediaire on Sunday.

“I wanted to ride a clean, accurate and crisp test,” she said. “I rode clean, pretty accurately but I made a mistake in the two-tempis. Even so, it was pretty awesome.”

She and her trainer, 1996 Olympic medalist Michelle Gibson, still have not decided who will continue the ride on Don Angelo, on whom Michelle won the U.S. National Intermediaire Championship in 2008.

“For now, it’s the first step in a great dream,” Devon said, “and we’ll keep going until…”

The pair will compete in some of the five CDIs scheduled for the next three months in Palm Beach to try to qualify for the U.S. national championships in September at which the Pan Am Games team will be selected.

Devon was so excited with the result that she bought a new riding coat Sunday and, in the spirit of superstition, plans to wear it for future competitions with Don Angelo.
