WERRIBEE, Australia, Dec. 11–Chantal Wigan and Ferero won the Pacific League Final Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday, and the right to represent Australia at the World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany, in April, but has not yet decided whether to make the trip.

In their second competition since returning home after three years in Europe, Chantal and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding scored 69.00 per cent to beat out Olympian Mary Hanna on the 10-year-old Sancette with 68.150 per cent Heath Ryan on his 2009 World Cup mount Regardez Moi in third place on 66.750 per cent.

Chantal and Ferero were placed first by three of the five judges, while two judges gave Mary Hanna and the Sandro Hit gelding top marks.

“I was really pleased with his Freestyle test,” Chantal said. “The trip home took quite a lot out of him but we are close to being back to full speed.”

Wigan returned to Australia in October after training in Europe for the past four years.

“I want to raise my profile in Australia and to bring home the knowledge I gained in Europe and help riders here to improve,” added the 36-year-old rider. “My focus in on London 2012.”

The winning pair took the Grand Prix on Friday.

The Marcus Oldham Aachen Challenge was a popular victory for 21-year-old Alexis Hellyer of Woodville, in New South Wales, who also placed 4th in the Prix St. Georges with a score of 67.895 per cent which won her the Statene Park Trophy for achieving the highest percentage in an official FEI test, by a rider aged 25 years and under.

The winner of the Aachen Challenge receives a trip to the CHIO in Germany next July.
