STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 21–Isabell Werth rode El Santo NRW to victory at the German Masters Grand Prix Special Sunday, after a win on her Olympic mount Satchmo that gave her a sixth Grand Prix Freestyle title at this indoor CDI5* attended by 60,800 spectators over five days.
“El Santo has performed really well here in Stuttgart and it was only his third international show,” Isabell said after posting a score of 76.875 per cent on the nine-year-old Rhineland gelding, the highest mark to date.
Austria’s Victoria Max-Theurer who had won the Grand Prix on Saturday aboard the 10-year-old stallion Augustin OLD was second with 74.583 per cent while Edward Gal of The Netherlands was third on the 11-year-old mare Sisther de Jeu on 73.958 per cent.
“I’m so unbelievably happy and pleased after Augustin had to undergo a colic operation in November 2009,” Vici said. “It’s wonderful that he’s back competing and that he’s been first and second in Stuttgart.” The stallion was the top Austrian qualifier for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky but withdrew over concerns about the possible affects on the horse of transatlantic air travel.
Isabell and El Santo received her ninth Otto Lörke Prize presented by the German Olympic Committee for outstanding performance by a horse up to the age of 10 years. Like Isabell’s other horses, El Santo is owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze and trained by Wolfram Wittig.
“El Santo is unbelievably proper and honest and has a lot of talent,” Isabell said. “It’s a proud moment for me and it’s proved that he’s a worthy winner of the Otto Lörke Preis.”
