LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Oct. 5–Germany inched to the top of the team jumping world championships Tuesday, but six nations were within a single rail that will make for a nail-biting final round under lights at the World Equestrian Games in the Kentucky Horse Park Wednesday night.
Brazil with 18.49 faults eased into second place behind Germany’s 17.80. Brazil had two clear rounds, one from triple World Cup winner Rodrigo Pessoa and the 10-year-old stallion HH Rebozo, owned by Double H Farm of Ridgefield, Connecticut and Wellington, Florida, and Alvaro Miranda on AD Ashleigh Drossell Dan.
Rodrigo, who sits in second individually, said the team is thrilled with their performance, but there are many more jumps ahead.
“The first two days have worked out good for us,” he said. “But you can see the results. There are seven teams within one rail. Tonight we sit here and we look pretty as one-two-three, but we could be seven-eight-nine or five-six-seven tomorrow. The story tomorrow is totally different. We’ll try to maintain and stay focused on what we have to do. Our riders are really experienced. The horses are good, so we’ll try to do our best to keep that position or maybe just slip one. That would be OK for us still. We’ll do our very best, because we’ve never been in this place before, so we’ll do the utmost.”
Germany had mixed fortunes with Carsten Otto-Nagel on Corradino going clear but Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum on Checkmate logged an uncharacteristic eight faults to be the discard score for the day.
The United States that had led overnight after clear rounds from Mario Deslauriers and Urico and McLain Ward and Sapphire faltered Tuesday with McLain and his 15-year-old double Olympic gold mare incurring four faults–her first rail down since the Nations Cup in St. Gallen, Switzerland in early summer–as did their 2008 Olympic team mates Laura Kraut and Cedric. Lauren Hough and Quick Study had a single time fault in addition to a rail down for a team total of 18.69 faults. Mario and Urico’s two rails down was the discard score for the round.
Eric Lamaze, competing with a broken foot on his Olympic individual gold medal mount Hickstead and John Pearce on Chianto had clear rounds for Canada, but each incurred a single penalty point while team rookie Jonathon Millar on Contino 14 had just five faults and the Olympic team silver medalists were in fourth place.
“My horse was great, he seems to be well-concentrated this week,” said Jonathon, who is the son of nine-time Olympian Ian Millar. “Our team is pulling through and we are keeping our fingers crossed. We are just taking it round by round, and we’ve just got to keep putting one foot in front of another, one step at a time.”
“You get the feeling that you are going quickly with him, but I could not have gone any faster down that last line with him,” said Lamaze of the 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood breeding stallion owned by Ashland Stables and Lamaze’s Torrey Pines Stable. “If that’s where I got the time fault, so be it. The last line was not a line that suits Hickstead – it is a not a line that suits a lot of horses. It was a hateful line to ride.”
Lamaze, who is competing with a broken left foot, has an individual score of 3.39, putting him in sixth place individually among the 121 horses competing. He is immediately followed by teammate Pearce, who is in seventh with a score of 3.70.
