LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Oct. 4–The United States finished one and two in the speed competition that was the first jumping event of the World Equestrian Games and put the team at the top of the leaderboard Monday.
Mario Deslauriers on Urico, a nine-year-old Dutch warmblood gelding, covered the Conrad Homfeld-designed course in 71.25 secs. with McLain Ward and his two-time Olympic team gold medal mare Sapphire, aged 15, just 0.54 secs. further back. Hungary’s Sandor Szász on Moosbachhofs Goldwing was in third place almost two seconds off the pace. The Florida-based Pablo Barrios of Venezuela on G&C Lagran finished fourth in the field of 121 horses in the Kentucky Horse Park main arena.
