SAUGERTIES, New York, Sept. 18–Cesar Parra, an Olympian for his native Colombia but now an American citizen, rode the 14-year-old Dutch gelding Olympia to sweep the small tour of the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire at the New England Dressage Association’s Fall Festival CDI-W.
Cesar of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, scored 71.00 per cent in the Prix St. Georges with Canadians Julie Watchorn on Quintesse second on 65.684 per cent and Lee Tubman on De la Rosa third on 65.211 per cent.
Cesar captured the Intermediaire I on Saturday with a score of 69.947 per cent with Canadians Annaliese Farber on Sandro’s Heir at 65.789 per cent and David Marcus and Don Kontes on 64.895 per cent.
In the freestyle on Sunday, the American pair scored 70.70 per cent for the win with Melissa Taylor of Wellington, Florida Chicco Roslev second on 69.80 per cent and Lee Tubman on De la Rosa third with 68.65 per cent.
The small tour of the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire has added significance over the next year as the Pan American Games to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011 are at that level.
If the U.S. does not finish high enough at the World Equestrian Games opening in Kentucky Saturday to qualify for the 2012 Olympics hopes for fielding a team in London will hinge on a top two finish at the Pan Am Games.
Cesar has a successful record for his native Colombia at the Pan Am Games, winning team silver in 1999 and finishing fourth individually in 2003.
On Friday, Sharon McCusker rode Juli Sherif to the 14-year-old Danish gelding’s first CDI victory in winning the World Cup qualifying Grand Prix. The Grand Prix Special on Saturday went to Canada’s Danielle Legriffon on Abrikos.
Sharon of Ashby, Massachusetts, scored 64.043 per cent with Susan Dutta of Wellington, Florida on Manette DC in second place on 63.872 per cent with Canada’s Jaimey Irwin on Dover in third place on 63.617 per cent.
Sharon was not placed first by any of the five judges, while Susan was placed first by two judges as was Jaimey.
The freestyle on Sunday resulted in the same top three as the Grand Prix.
Sharon and Juli Sherif won with 69.150 per cent, Susan Dutta and Manette DC were second on 69.100 per cent and Jaime Irwin and Dover third on 67.150 per cent.
