MÜNSTER, Germany, Aug. 13–Anabel Balkenhol, recovered from her hospital stay a month ago, rode Dablino to a narrow victory in the Grand Prix at the German Championships that saw its share of upsets, including Monica Theodorescu withdrawing Whisper who trotted unevenly part way through the ride.
In the championships which will help determine the German team for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky next month, Anabel and the 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding by De Niroscored 74.979 per cent with Isabell Werth on her 2007 World Cup champion mount Warum Nicht FRH in second place on 74.426 per cent and Hubertus Schmidt and the nine-year-old Donnelly third on 72.864 per cent.
Anabel’s Nations Cup team mate at Aachen, Matthias Alexander Rath on Sterntaler UNICEF placed fourth on 72.596 per cent while Donnperignon, ridden by Christof Koschel and also on the Aachen squad, spooked to lead to a serious loss of marks and finished in 10th place on 68.408 per cent.
The Special will be held Saturday and the Musical Freestyle Sunday.
